Louisbourg Crab Fest
In
1993, a group of local citizens had an idea of starting a Crab
Festival. What a better way to end the summer and celebrate the
delicious landings of the local crab fishermen at the same time. Little
did they know then, that this little idea would grow into a Maritime
renown festival with people making it a point of returning year after
year. Since its humble beginnings that first summer, the Crab Fest
has improved and grown stronger each year. It now boasts a visitor rate
of approximately 5,000 for the 2 day event. The festival is sponsored by
the Louisbourg Crab Fest Committee, in conjunction with the local
Volunteer Fire Department and its Ladies Auxiliary. It takes place under
big-top tents on the water front site adjacent to Louisbourg's
waterfront. This is a family-oriented event, with activities such as
games and face painting for children, as well as an impressive roster of
live Celtic entertainment. The festival gets underway early in the
evening of Friday, with various performances by traditional
entertainers. Bar service is available, and for those craving a taste of
the sea, mussels are also available during the evening. In addition to
the sea fare, canteen services are also available on the site. Unique
Crab Fest items are sold and make great souvenirs of the annual
festival. Beginning Saturday, "the crab dinners will be on sale
from noon til they're gone." Such community dinners have the
deserved reputation of providing in-season fare at excellent prices.
Superb entertainment will continue including performances by various
traditional bands throughout the day and well into the evening,
children's entertainment, face painting, and "games galore".
The festival boasts a superb line-up of traditional music, sure to
please all in attendance. The bar and canteen services will be open all
day as well.
