APPENDIX O. FATE OF THE LOUISBOURG GARRISON

The fate of the garrison stationed at Louisbourg in 1744 was not a happy one. Almost 40 per cent had either deserted or died by the time the French returned to Louisbourg in 1749. Many of those who deserted when the troops reached Rochefort in 1745 may have returned under the terns of the amnesty announced in 1746, but the exact number of those who did is unknown.
