PREFACE
PREFACE:
[PAGE viii:]
Though this report is primarily designed to meet proximate restoration requirements, it
also provides the historical basis for the future interpretation of Block 4 and its
inhabitants. Some themes could be placed in a broader context, for example the internal
commerce of Louisbourg, but all the direct information that can be Placed in such
perspective is contained in this report. This report incorporates all pertinent
information on properties, inhabitants and structures that can be found in the Fortress
Louisbourg Archives and library, except for data on fences and gardens, where the
evidence, highly stylized and riddled with contradiction, defies analysis.
In the preparation of any major report the aid of colleagues is always desirable; for an
historians first report at Fortress Louisbourg it is essential. I acknowledge the
unstinting cooperation of my fellow researchers on the history staff, in particular Gilles
Proulx, whose counsel on difficult contextual translation, on terminology and on general
subject areas relating to the Block 4 study was invaluable. I also want to thank Marmon
Smith, research draftsman, for his work on the Block 4 illustrations.
