There are some excellent external databases which researchers should consult when researching  18th-century Nova Scotia subjects. As well, because these are dedicated databases, the information that they contain will not be revealed when consulting search engines like google, etc.

• http://www.biographi.ca/ - The Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
    

• http://daryl.chin.gc.ca:8000/BASIS/acns/user/www/sf - Atlantic Canada Newspaper Survey: Goods and services advertised in East Coast newspapers before 1900.
    

• http://www.archives.ca/02/020154_e.html - Since its inception in 1872, the National Archives of Canada has acquired, preserved and commemorated the cartographic heritage of Canada and there are now some two million items in the collection. This search tool provides access to approximately 40,000 item-level descriptions from the "old map card catalogue." About 4,000 items from the catalogue, now in the public domain, have been digitized and may be consulted online. This number will increase on a regular basis
    

• http://www.archives.ca/02/0201/020199_e.html - ArchiviaNet, the National Archives of Canada's online research and consultation tool, provides access to a variety of information resources related to the actual archival holdings. It allows a number of different means of exploration of the fonds and collections by offering the option of searching by theme or by type of document. Some of the finding aids describe groups of documents, while others describe individual items, of which some are digitized and available online.

•  http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/canadiandirectories/index-e.html  - Library and Archives Canada has one of the richest Canadian directory collections in the world. The collection includes Canadian national, provincial/territorial, county and city directories, primarily of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in paper, microform and electronic formats.

FRANCE

• http://bd.archivescanadafrance.org/acf/fonds-monuments-historiques.html  - This database contains descriptions and reproductions of documents related to New France (correspondence, reports, maps and plans, and drawings) included in fonds and series conserved at the Centre des archives d’outre-mer (Aix-en-Provence), the Centre historique des Archives nationales (Paris), and Library and Archives Canada (Ottawa). Between now and 2005, this database will continue to evolve, and be enhanced by additions from the Archives nationales du Québec, and from the departmental archives of Calvados, Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and Seine-Maritime.

•  http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/index.cfm NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 415,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more.

• http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/ - American Memory is a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections as of 2004
    

• http://www.shipindex.org - This Maritime History on the Internet index will tell you which books or magazines mention specific vessels. Also, you can even type in a year and get a list of ships.
