Israel Newton Society of Colonial War Monument at Rochefort Point "In the year 1939 there was erected in this same English Cemetery ( Rochefort Point ), a replica stone to the memory of Major Newton of Burr’s Regiment. This stone is a faithful replica of the Major’s gravestone in Colchester, Connecticut. The Major died in the month of May, 1745, while the siege was in progress. He was buried in Cape Breton, there is scarcely a doubt that it was between Landing Cove and Rochefort Point. This stone is made of the same material and by the same firm, namely the Bottinelli Monument Company of New Britain, Conn, who made the original stone nearly two hundred years ago. On the original, at the bottom, is the epitaph of Major Newton’s wife, Hannah, who died thirty-five years after, at the age of 88 years. This epitaph, however, is not included in the Replica Stone, but only that of the Major, which reads In Memory of Major Israel Newton who died at the Siege of Cape Breton, on the 24th day of May, A.D., 1745. Aetatis, 51 y]o. This Replica Stone was donated by the Connecticut branch of the Society of Colonial Wars, through the efforts of its Secretary, Professor Arthur Adams of Trinity College, and its Treasurer, Edgar Francis Waterman, Esq., both of Hartford, Conn., and Mr. C. A. Newton of Napierville, Illinois, a descendant of Manor Newton and author of "Connecticut at Louisbourg," It was unveiled on August 10, 1939 by W.W. Patton, M.D. [Almon, Albert, Rochefort Point: A Silent City in Louisbourg, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, 1940, p. 13]
